Katie Update #17
Katie's day today promises to be a bit more active than yesterday. The EEG readings from last night showed far fewer seizures than we saw over the prior two nights. The seizures were equally as short, which again has the neurology team encouraged. Because this reduction in seizure activity occurred despite a slight reduction in her Pentobarbitol levels, the doctors decided that it was unlikely that the Pentobarbitol itself was now playing much of a role in suppressing her seizures. Therefore, as of around 10 AM this morning, they have completely weaned her from this drug. They are also looking at reducing her intake of Versed, a strong sedative and "amnesiac" that she's had administered since very early on, and starting her on Methadone to help curb the withdrawal symptoms associated with the removal of some of these drugs from her system. The weaning of Pentobarbitol and Versed is both exciting and scary. Assuming no setbacks, Katie will undoubtedly regain some level of consciousness over the next 24 to 48 hours. We are looking forward to seeing some further signs of consciousness, but anxiety, both for ourselves and especially for Katie, is likely to be high. We expect to spend a number of sleepless hours at Katie's side reassuring and comforting her as she slowly re-enters the world, confused and frightened.
The doctors are also readjusting her medications a bit. Because Katie continues to carry a high temperature, early this morning doctors decided to add a second antibiotic to her treatment regime to insure that she can fight off any bacterial infection that may be plaguing her. They later decided to start her on a fourth anti-seizure medication in an attempt to stop her seizures altogether. Because of potential drug interaction problems, however, the new medicine requires that they switch to a different type of antibiotic, to which Katie showed some allergic reactions when she was younger. So they are now testing her to see if and how she reacts to this medication as a young adult prior to starting these new medications in earnest. This is simply one of many examples of the type of balancing acts that our doctors have had to perform throughout this ordeal. With luck, though, if the seizures can be controlled completely and Katie can be returned successfully to a more conscious state, doctors can reduce further her dependence on all of these medications, simplifying her treatment regime and further stabilizing her overall condition. As always, only time will tell.
As I wrote above, this time is both exciting and frightening for all of us. I'm certain there will be more news to report tomorrow. As always, join us in praying that this news will be good and that we can continue to try and bring our Katie back to consciousness.
Thanks as always,
Paul

Dear Katie,
I'm thankful that the latest update sounds like you're on you way to waking up. I keep asking friends for prayers for you and sharing your website with them, so they can see what a beautiful girl you are and learn more about you. When I read comments to you, I had to chuckle at your cousin Ben's jokes. How could anyone know so many jokes. I'll keep praying and you keep fighting to get better.
Love,
Jan Gillean
Mel,

Love,

Paul,
Please pass along our prayers for comfort and peace - it sounds very exciting and the best news yet. Be still and know that God is there with you all and the outcome is part of his divine plan. Thank you so much for the updates. I am a member of Trinity but haven't met your family. I have been so inspired by you all! Your sister is making an impact on so many people that she doesn't even know! That I know is God's plan. Through Katie and your family, people are seeing the impact Christ has and the strength he provides, so that when we face uncertain circumstances, we know who to lean on. Thank you all!

Katie, We continue to pray for you daily and just feel "for sure" that you will awaken soon. You are such a strong person--such a fighter. God is continually looking over you and will continue to give you the necessary strenth to be completely healed. Your brother Paul is a very special brother. He loves you so much and we thank him for sharing your progress. Ron and Melrose, be encouraged. God is in control.I think this verse should be Katie's.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 20:11

Katie,
Keep reaching for the prize baby doll. We know that you can do it. I think about you everyday and I really thought about you today. A child that I tutor is in Geometry (yes, your favorite subject), she is currently doing proofs. She asked me, "What difference does it make if two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, I won't be the one cutting them." She then replied, "I really do not like proofs." I could not help but laugh. She reminded me so much of you whenever you had to do proofs. I laughed really hard. I could see you telling me those same statements and then smiling.
I will tell you this, you got through proofs and proved to yourself that you could do them. You will get through this. I had faith in you then and I have faith in you now. I prayed for you then and I pray for you now. Keep getting better.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

Dear Katie and family, We anxiously await news about your day. We rely on your brother Paul to give us the details on your "awakening" as we know your parents are at your bedside and will stay there throughout this process. We pray that you and your family stay brave, patient and hopeful during these hours ahead. We pray that your physicians continue to make the necessary adjustments in your meds so that your recovery will remain on course. This ordeal will have a happy ending! God is holding you close to His heart. Go Katie! We send our love to you all.
