Katie Update #8
Well, first of all I apologize for the extended period between updates.
It has been a tiring few days, and occasionally I find myself a bit too
tired to think, much less write coherently. Assume, though, that no news
is good news for now. As I wrote in an earlier update, bad news both
arrives and travels faster than good news, or in this case, news that
reports essentially the status quo.
Katie remains physically healthy. She is 100% over her staph infection
and is maintaining a temperature below 100 (often below 99), which is
very good. She is breathing well (though she still has some limited
fluid in her lungs), and all of her blood test continue to indicate that
she is handling her medically induced coma well. Certainly things could
change here, but we believe that she has somewhat "passed the test" in
terms of her medical stability. Neurologically, she is still giving the
doctors fits, however. Her liver is so strong that she has started to
develop a significant tolerance for the Pentobarbitol. This is good news
for her liver, but frustrating for the doctors because they are having a
hard time putting her brain to sleep like they want. Even with a strong
dosage, she is still showing some brain activity, and she is still
having periodic seizures. As I left her this morning, the nurses were
administering a higher dose of the drug, so with luck this will succeed
in getting her back into "burst suppression," which is what the
neurologists want to see (we now have 3 neurologists on the "team" as
well as 2 neurology students, so we are getting a lot of collective
brainpower--uugh, no pun intended).
So in all, things still look pretty good. She still is a bit of a
mystery for our doctors in terms of exactly what is causing the
encephalitis and at times in terms of how she is responding to
medications, but all of the doctors remain confident that she will
eventually pull through this. Aside from sleep deprivation and the
exhausting effects of the emotional roller coaster we've been riding, my
parents and I remain in pretty good shape. Ron and Melrose have been
able to sleep at home the past few nights, which has been really good.
I've manned the night shift, getting a good bit of sleep in a chair in
Katie's room and usually supplementing it with a nap at home during the
day, so I'm doing fine as well. Spirits remain high most of the time,
and your continued thoughts and prayers have kept us all uplifted.
Tom Greene is out of surgery and going through the pains of recovery
from a fairly invasive procedure. The final results are not in, but his
surgeon feels confident that his problem is one that is treatable. God
willing, the final results today will confirm this and his family and
friends will all be greatly relieved.
Thanks as ever for your prayers and support. I will do my best to keep
the long inter-update delays to a minimum. God bless.

Dear Katie, I am so glad that you made it through your staph infection, I know that those can be dangerous. I hope that you continue to get better and that you can be back in school soon. The whole school prays for you every class. I just wanted to say that we're praying for you.
Love in Christ,
Katie Piggott

Hey Katie,
Yea, its me again I bet you are getting tired of reading all of my e-mails, even the ones I ally send to you twice.
So far things are ok over here, neither here nor there but ok.
School is going ok, history and English are going pretty good. Math and Spanish are hard, you’d be proud of my Spanish score, I got a 96 on the last quiz( which incidentally was today) Technology is of course very boring as I have already told you, I nearly fell asleep today.
Science is my best subject so far, I really enjoy it, my teacher Mr.Seehorn has told us that we are going to do an oil project, he is going to pour a little oil into a dish of water and we have to get as much of the oil out in 3 minutes. We can use any method we want. He told us a funny story the other day about what one guy brought, he brought a tampon to absorb the oil, he was about to get a 100 on the test when the tampon disindegrated because of the oil. We get marked on creativity, effectiveness, and environmental health, do you have any ideas? If you do tell me.
Farm is pretty fun, we have a show first thing tomorrow morning and I can’t wait !!!!! im getting really nervous about it so root for me J
I hope my calf does ok, we practiced today after school but I’m still undecided about how she is going to act, I have named her Diminutive but I call her Bossy for short. She is a black Angus cross and she actually has a pretty good temperament for and angus cross.
I look you up every day in technology (that’s one of the few things useful I get done in that class) and I miss you a WHOLE LOT.
Im praying for ya gurl!!
Get better soon so I can show you some of the finer moves in showing cows.
Here is a joke, it might not be as good as benmen’s but it’s the best I could find.
(this is directed at Ron) knock knock, whose there? Adair, adair who? I had hair but now I don’t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well, ill admit it’s kinda corny but oh well,
please forgive the spelling mistakes, I left them in so this letter wouldn’t sound so formal.
Once again, I love you a WHOLE LOT and can’t wait until you wake up.
Love from you FAVORITE cousin
Abby
P.S. someone told me that too much sleep isn’t good for you, tisk tisk
(Waving finger at you) noughty noughty
P.P.S Benmen has a new hair doo so when you see him be sure to call him y Beast, he now looks like someone out of the 60s. Ugh, I liked it better when I was all over the place instead of slicked back.
Love you lots
